Hacop Hovonatanian (Yahya Zoka'). Born in Tiflis, the capital of Georgia, Hacop Hovonatanian (?-1881) learned painting under the supervision of his father and was eventually awarded the title of Non-classical Artist and a gold medal from the Art Academy of St. Petersburg.
During the last third of his lifetime, he became attracted towards oriental, particularly Persian, painting and traveled to Iran, where he was first admitted among the painters of Nasser-ed-Din Shah's court and later awarded a firman endowing him with the title of Naqqash-bashi (Painter in Chief) and a medal of science. The present article examines the life and works of this Armenian painter.
